Ethisphere Institute and Thomson Reuters will host the 6th Annual Global Ethics Summit at the Crowne Plaza Times Square in New York City. The event will be attended by CEOs, Board Chairs, GRC leaders, and government and regulatory officials, and will offer critical and timely insight into the challenges compliance and ethics professionals face while navigating an increasingly complex and daunting legal landscape.
The Consortium for Trustworthy Organization's Dr. Robert Hurley presents on the panel: Is Compliance Enough? How to Foster Ethical Decision Making from the Top Down.
In the age of increasing government regulation and ever-present corporate scandals, many of us have – perhaps understandably – focused more and more heavily on compliance at the expense of ethics for the past several years. Consider, however, if that shift in focus is helping or hurting our cause? No one disputes that compliance is an important – in fact, crucial – element of corporate integrity. But, it shouldn’t be the only aim. When considering a route of action, “it’s legal, so it’s ethical” is a common refrain, despite its obvious pretense. The reverse statement, however, is always – or nearly always – true. As such, an ethical or moral compass is imperative for true compliance. Principled associates are more likely to comply with laws and policies than are employees who simply follow the letter of the law. So, what can organizations do to foster principled action at all levels?
